I’m not gonna lie, but I’m a bit of a fitness nerd. I love to log everything I do, in and out of the gym.
Activity trackers allow you to do that, by showing you an overview of your daily activity and caloric expenditure.
Last week I came across the FitBit Flex 2, and due to its reasonable price and minimalistic design, I decided to do some research on this product.
The Fitbit Flex 2 is an activity and sleep tracker, with a basic and clean looking design. It tracks your steps, how many calories you burn, how active you are, and even measures your sleep quality.
Here’s a quick overview of the pros and cons of this device:
It’s waterproof and can track swimming activity.
Great variety of interchangeable wristbands and can also be worn as a bangle or a pendant.
Has silent alarms, which are cool if you don’t want to disturb anyone in the house.
Battery life is not that great.
Does not have a heart rate monitor.
Does not track weight lifting as an activity.
The Fitbit Flex 2 is a pretty basic activity tracker but has a lot of cool features in store.
The main features of this device are:
Sleep tracker, which measures how much sleep you get each night, as well as the quality of your sleep.
Call and text notifications.
Move reminders, which go off when you sit for too long.
It can track walking, cycling, running, swimming or any other type of aerobic activity.
Has 5 LED lights, that show your progress so far for that day (for example, when all 5 lights are on, then this means that you’ve reached your daily step goal)
The syncing process is pretty straight-forward. The device pairs with your smartphone via Bluetooth, and you can see your progress on the Fitbit app or on the website.
The Fitbit app is very easy to use. Once you log in, you can see an overview of the calories you’ve burned so far, your daily steps, your activity, how much you’ve slept, the quality of your sleep, etc.
The coolest thing about the Fitbit app (or website) is that it has a great community of people who share their fitness goals and progress with everyone, and there are also plenty of daily challenges that members set for each other.
This is a great way to have some fun competition, as well as keeping up with your fitness goals.
So when you lack motivation or feel discouraged, you can just take a look at the Fitbit community and maybe take on a fun challenge.
What I like about the Fitbit Flex 2:
1. Ease of use.
Because it doesn’t have a screen, you don’t really have to play around with settings or configurations, like other activity trackers that do have a screen.
All you have to do is to pair it with your smartphone via Bluetooth, and you can view all your stats on the Fitbit app.
Pretty easy and straight-forward.
2. Silent Alarms.
It’s always a good thing to not disturb anyone in the house when your alarm clock goes off. The Fitbit Flex 2 has a silent alarm, which wakes you up by vibrating.
3. Move reminders.
Most of us sit for too long every day, whether it is at work, school or just sitting on the couch at home. This device has a built-in move reminder, that vibrates if you sit for too long.
4. Great variety in bands.
One thing I really love about the Fitbit Flex 2, is how easy it is to change the band.
Let’s say you bought it in black, but down the road, you decide you’d rather have it in red or white.
Well, you’re in luck, because the Fitbit’s wristbands are interchangeable, and you can just purchase a 3-pack of different coloured bands to put it into.
There are also more premium bands out there, made of solid materials, and it can also be worn as a bangle or pendant.
What I don’t like about the Fitbit Flex 2:
1. Battery life.
This is by far the biggest drawback of this device.
The battery on this device lasts for approximately 4 days, which in my opinion is below average compared to other activity trackers at the same price range.
Other activity trackers such as the … can last up to one week with a single charge.
So, if battery life is important to you, you might consider purchasing that one instead.
2. It does not track weight lifting as an activity.
I love going to the gym and pumping iron.
I can tell that I’ve burned a lot of calories after a brutal weight training workout when my t-shirt is soaking wet and I’m out of breath.
Sadly, the Fitbit Flex 2 does not track lifting weights as an activity, and therefore wouldn’t show anything on the activity chart after an exhausting weightlifting session.
3. It does not have a heart rate monitor.
When it comes to training and recovery, heart rate monitors are very helpful.
Besides telling how hard you’re working, when you push through a challenging workout, they can also help you know when you are overtrained, by looking at your resting heart rate.
For example, if your resting heart rate is a lot higher than it used to be, it might be a sign of overtraining.
Unfortunately, the Fitbit Flex 2 does not have a heart rate monitor, which is kind of disappointing for me.
Who should buy the Fitbit Flex 2?
If you are not really a tech-geek when it comes to gadgets, and you just want something that is simple and easy to ease at a fair price, then the Fitbit Flex 2 is a good choice.
It has all the basic functions of an activity tracker, and the Fitbit app is a very user-friendly platform, which can really motivate you and help you push yourself every day.
Who should not buy the Fitbit Flex 2?
If you are a bit more involved in training, then the Fitbit Flex 2 might not be a good choice for you.
It’s lack of heart rate monitor, GPS and inability to track weight lifting sessions as an activity, make this device very limited when it comes to having a more detailed overview of your training.
Consider buying a Fitbit Ionic GPS Smart Watch instead, which includes a heart rate monitor, a GPS (hence the name) and can also work as a watch.
Overall, the Fitbit Flex 2 is a minimalistic activity and sleep tracker, which can do the most basic functions relatively well.
Looking at an overview of your daily activity and steps can be really motivating, especially when you have a daily goal of how much activity you want to do.
For example, you might have a daily goal of 10.000 steps and burn at least 1.000 calories in your workout.
If you are looking for a simple activity tracker, that will show you how many steps you take each day, how many calories you’ve burned and just give you a basic overview of your activity, then the Fitbit Flex 2, at just under 100$, might be the right choice for you.
